Deep Into The Terminology World Making Printed Circuit Boards

To be part of this world, we feel that every fellow should know the basic terminologies related with the Making Printed Circuit Boards. These terminologies are must to acknowledge if one’s intends to master himself/herself in the field of electronics or more precisely PCB world.

Mil: It is the unit of length. It is used in very small or precise measurements that are those in the PCB design. It means the thousandth of an inch. It is also called “Thou” sometimes.

Trace: The trace is the pathway made out of copper to provide the electrical connections between the different elements.

Via: The via is the small hole with the copper inside. The copper serves the electrical connections between the traces from one side to another side.

Pads: In the modern technology, there are many surface mount devices are used in the PCBs. To solder them, the pads are used for this purpose.

Surface Finish: In this domain, the surface finish indicates the protective layer, which protects the pads (copper) from the oxidation.

Panelizing: This is the approach used by the manufacturers of the circuit boards to increase the productivity. It means to create a gigantic pc board and then cut down the small but similar boards from it.

PCBA: It stands for Printed Circuit Board Assembly. This term is widely used by the manufacturers or sellers who are selling or providing the solder services for the user’s pc board.

Gerber File: It is the file which is used to tell the steps that are required in the manufacturing of a certain circuit board. The file can be developed by using the relevant software as well.

Through-hole Components: They are the components which have lead so that it has to pass thru the hole from one side to the other side.
